Multilateration audio analysis for a killing in Nablus
Multilateration audio analysis for a killing in Nablus

The Washington Post commissioned Earshot to conduct an audio ballistic analysis of a shooting incident that took place on February 22nd in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus.

Three separate videos captured the sound of gunshots during this incident. To confirm the origin of all audible gunshots, we employed a technique known as "Multilateration." Multilateration, akin to triangulation, entails measuring the time difference between the arrival of a sound at two or more recording positions. Using this method, we were able to convert these time differences, measured in milliseconds, into spatial coordinates. The variance in the time it took for each gunshot to reach two different cameras recording the incident enabled us to determine the shooter's position within the scene.

Our analysis conclusively refutes any claims suggesting that the casualties on that day resulted from a crossfire between the occupying forces and armed resistance. Instead, our findings strongly indicate that the individual responsible for all the deaths and injuries during the incident was the shooter inside the armored military vehicle.

A comprehensive account of our findings and the methodology employed can be found in the above video.
